Chron’s Disease NO MORE!

First off I want to thank all of my family, friends and followers for the prayers and thoughts these last few days as I prepped and got another colonoscopy today!  And extra special thanks to my grandparents who kept my kiddos so I could get this all checked out!!!

For my new followers: A bit of a background…

I suffered through belly pains and various stomach issues through college and against my will…with a little extra nudge from my mom…I gave in – and in the 3 days between my college graduation and moving to the beach I got the dreaded colonoscopy which determined I had Chron’s Disease. Me. 21-years old. In what I thought was pretty decent health…diagnosed with a “disease”.

Seemed crazy but there wasn’t much I could do…or I didn’t think there was much I could do! I got the prescribed, very expensive meds that I would take 3x a day and off to OCMD I went.

In all honesty – I didn’t exactly take care of myself while living at the beach! And that showed through the constant issues I had. I would find myself leaving places suddenly to go home and curl up in a ball on the bathroom floor. It was AWFUL! And this cycle continued for a few years. If I had too much dairy, alcohol, veggies or breads and pastas my body would suffer! I learned the big “trigger foods” but still had my fair share of issues because there were also the “no rhyme or reason” issues too!!! I would continue my annual colonoscopy that would typically show no change…I wasn’t getting worse but I wasn’t getting any better either!

Fast forward:

7 years

2 kiddos

and a wealth of mom-knowledge later and I started making HEALTHIER changes in my life that were doing more than just shrinking my waistline.

I started EXERCISING regularly…I started EATING balanced, clean foods – with limited dairy, additives, sugars, and gluten…and I incorporated SHAKEOLOGY – a nutrient dense superfood meal replacement shake that was giving my body superfoods I couldn’t find otherwise. Finally – 6 months in I made an appointment with my Digestive Disorder Doctor to determine if I could stop all together!!! After sharing my story and completing our consolation he agreed – I could COMPLETELY stop by meds!!! What I thought was even cooler…was that when I shared what I had done he told me that I wasn’t the first to have such similar successes!

You see – they used to be quick to just medicate and move one but what the doctors are realizing is that there is so much weight to be placed on NUTRITION and how that impacts YOUR LIFE. So today was the day…I prepped (which I have to say either I am growing up or its not nearly as bad as it used to be!!!!), I went in, and the doctor was more than pleased!!! He told me on a scale of 1-10 my Chron’s is “barely a 1” – EEEEEK!!!!

While I will always carry the risk and it could come back…as long as I continue doing what I’m doing and feeling the way I’m feeling I am GOOD TO GO!!!

If you suffer from chron’s or ulcerative colitis or IBS or anything else – I urge you to dig down into the way you’re treating your body!!! I am forever grateful that I joined my very first challenge group last year, that I decided to INVEST in my health and commit to this lifestyle. I have no clue where I’d be if I didn’t – but I don’t ever want to know!

21-day fix week 1 Recap – prepped for week 2

One week down…2 to go!!!!

I’ll be honest…I thought I was kind of sort of going to breeze through this program since I had been used to the Extreme program however…that was not the case!!!

This week really challenged me but-I did the best I could, used the highest weights I felt I could handle and when I needed to…dropped down!

I had one small hiccup on Tuesday as I found myself with what I self-diagnosed was turf toe. Out of NOWHERE my left big toe was red, hot to touch, swollen and very painful. I asked around and while the general consensus was gout – I have pretty much zero of the common causes for gout and much more likely to be turf toe.

I changed up my planned workout schedule by going with Pilates on Thursday (with lots of modifications and one-footed planks) and then Lower Fix Friday and Cardio Saturday at an event in my hometown ran by one of my coaches. I will say I love the flexibility

Yes – you read that right – this 29 year old heathy mama has a scheduled COLONOSCOPY!!!

After having huge successes last year with the addition of my superfood magic potion Shakeology and the switch to clean eating I was completely taken off all of my Chron’s disease meds and this will determine whether or not I can forgo these lovely procedures until I hit 50 like the rest of the population!

Spicy Quinoa Zucchini Bowl

Looking for a healthy, clean, 21-day fix approved lunch in less than 5 minutes?

Try this little mash up!

WHAT YOU NEED:

Zucchini

Ground Turkey

Cooked Quinoa

hot sauce of your choice

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

Heat skillet over medium heat. I spritzed the pan with olive oil

Using a VEGETTI or other vegetable spiralizer, make your “noodles” and add to the pan. I counted my one zucchini as one GREEN although its likely a bit more.

Add 1 RED of ground turkey and 1 YELLOW of quinoa – this is where the meal prep Monday really comes into play!!!

Cook for an additional 2 minutes until heated thoroughly.

Top with a few drops of your favorite hot sauce – and ENJOY!

This meal is one that can be doubled or tripled for as many servings as you need or you can even prep in full at the beginning of the week and have it all ready to grab and go!

I always try to keep cooked ground turkey, cooked quinoa etc. for a quick and easy meal!!! And while I kept it simple with the zucchini you could also add in other veggies like tomatoes and spinach or rather than hot sauce try salsa and/or avocado for a little Mexican twist!!! 

Get creative, have fun with it! Remember – clean eating doesn’t have to be boring!!!

Here we go again…21 Day Fix Week 1

I decided to take it back to the basics…back to the program that changed my life, that got me hooked on a healthy, fit and balanced life!!! 2015-06-01 05.57.27

I’ve been a bit lax and a bit too comfortable and slowly I’ve been getting away from my normal 80/20 maintenance rule and its been more like 70/30 or even 60/40 on the weekends I am feeling and seeing the side effects!

So…Today not only marks day 1 for my challengers but also for myself – to recommit – and together we will be COUNTING DOWN TO SUMMER with the 21-day fix.

I got too caught up in my role as a coach that I forgot to be a challenger too!

We are busy busy busy as I’m sure most of you are too…so what I’ve learned is to stay on track you have to be prepared! I will plan to make my Mancakes the night before so they’re ready to go as I head to the park etc with my kiddos.. I also  planned for an easy to pack apple and almond afternoon snack! No excuses…Summer is on the way!!!

Blueberry Muffin Power Mancakes

Just when I thought Mancakes couldn’t get any better…this little creation came about

Ok – so a lot of you may already know I am a HUGE fan of Mancakes – specifically the Berry Mancakes however as I was prepping to leave for vacation I had some blueberries that needed to be used up and one very ripe banana so I figured I’d whip up some Mancakes for our road trip to the OBX – after all these are one of my favorite road trip/car meals!

I remembered a little convo with one of my coaches who mentioned she had added walnuts once before so I went for it and then I kept on adding! And while I don’t always want to consume my “blues” with breakfast, these were just like a treat!!!!

WHAT YOU NEED:

(makes 2 servings-each serving: 1 red, 1 blue, 1 yellow, 1 purple, 1/2 Green )

  • 2 eggs
  • 8 egg whites
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 16 walnuts
  • 1-2 tsp cinnamon

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

  • Heat skillet to medium heat
  • Combine all ingredients into the blender
  • Blend until you reach your desired consistency (I usually do about 20-30 seconds)
  • Pour into pan and cook as “normal” pancakes – heating until bubbles form on top, flipping once.

This got me about 9 small mancakes for each serving and I loved the little crunch of the walnuts!!!

A repeat recipe no doubt!

Let’s rewind…

I joined my first challenge group a year into my Stay at Home Mom (SAHM) life. It was February and I had left my career in public accounting the April prior. It was hard enough for me to “splurge” on the challenge pack but I really wanted a change so I went with it. I ordered and immediately cancelled the auto shipments. Again, there was NO WAY I could afford this monthly. But I also committed to myself. I had made the investment in the challenge pack and I was investing in ME. My 21-day fix results – Round 1 – never missed a shakeo!!

Guess what???? I GOT RESULTS – In just 3 short weeks….It actually worked!

Now the hard part came…I wanted another bag of the Shakeology but how????

Here’s what I did:

1) First, I signed up as a coach. Well – a discount coach – but it was the same process – I mean – who doesn’t want to save $$$. This had a big appeal and since I had already purchased a challenge pack there was no sign up fee and if I did nothing else, I would at least be saving $15/month. SWEET!

2) I stopped my prescription prenatal vitamin that was costing me $30/month.

I was nursing my 9 month old at the time and after talking to my doctor the vitamins and minerals found in my prenatal were also in Shakeology! The only thing I had to add was a separate DHA supplement!!! WINNING!!!! As always – if you’re pregnant or nursing you should talk to your doctor first. But then again you should actually consider EVERYTHING you put into your body – Shakeology included – but also that cookie, the pizza, the coffee mocha frap, the fast food – etc.. You should think about EVERYTHING you’re eating. I know when I did I quickly realized you can’t get the all natural, non-GMO nutrition found in Shakeology in other foods and personally I couldn’t think of a better food to fuel my body with and my family!!!

I was actually giving my little one MORE nutrition that before! I wonder if I could quantify the amount of money saved from not having to go to the doctor – from establishing healthy nutrition habits in my young one?!?! Ok – tangent over – back to it…

3) I was able to completely STOP by Chron’s Disease medicine – savings – $60/month. After taking medicine for nearly 7 years I started noticing very positive changes to my digestive system. I reduced my dosage on my own and after 4 months of my daily dense superfood Shakeology, regular exercise, and making that transition to clean eating…I was confident I didn’t need it anymore! I made an appointment with my GI specialist and in August got the official words to stop all medication! If nothing else – that aspect alone is enough for me to ensure this lifestyle is simply that MY LIFE!

4) We stopped eating out!!!

For almost the first 6 months – we truly just didn’t eat out! Once we made the investment in the Shakeology and investment in our own health we realized we could cook the foods we liked in the portions our bodies needed for a fraction of the cost. We ditched the pizza and wings Friday night ritual and the 1x/week dinner out. I’ll estimate that by cooking dinner in vs. ordering out 1x a week and eating dinner out 1x a week our family of four saved at least $40/week, of that my portion was at least $15…and I actually think this is a super low ball park number!!! We never messed around when we would go out – there was always an app and always a dessert so this became a huge saver for us! We also found that shakeology shaken up on the road makes for the healthiest and most convenient fast food EVER!!!

Rough guess – $60/month for myself – $120/month for my family 

So as you can see – from the compound effect of the changes we made – while we were spending an additional $115 on one bag of Shakeology – I was saving $165!!! And we didn’t even address that this replaced my prior unhealthy not all natural oatmeal packet breakfast I used to eat or the ice cream we would frequently grab from Dairy Queen 🙂

And all the while this is saving me money, helping me feel better and allowing me to be the BEST mom/wife possible…I started to inspire others along the way. Those closest to me – aka – my ENTIRE FAMILY!

When I first became a Beachbody coach I kind of kept it quiet (I know, I know seems crazy now… ) but seriously…I worried about what others would think of me. All I wanted to be was a SAHM and I had that! So even after I started to think of Coaching as a “job” when people asked me if I worked I responded “no, not really” and never brought it up!! It took me MONTHS before I would say with CONFIDENCE—> “I am a Beachbody Coach!”

Why??? Well…there were a few reasons…

***What would my former co-workers think?! I left the Audit world and set my CPA license aside to be a SAHM-my dream come true-and while that seemed “acceptable” now I’m an online health and fitness coach creating a business through social media helping others reach their own health and fitness goals and begin to live their life by design…say what?! Seems too good to be true…but here’s the thing…ITS NOT!!!

***What would my friends think?!?! I don’t want them to feel like “I’m selling” them something…but at the same time this has been such an incredible blessing in my life and I want them to have the same opportunity. I want EVERYONE to feel the way I do and be happy, healthy and CONFIDENT.  But how do I do that without being pushy?! Maybe I should just say nothing…and hope they come to me if they want to?!?!

***What would my family think?! Would they see the full potential or would they see this as me “playing on Facebook”?? Would they support this new time commitment in my life?! How will I still balance it all??? Can I balance it all? Maybe I’ll just pretend this is something I do on the side

And the list goes on…

Truth is I was too worried about these “what ifs” that I didn’t SHARE this incredible OPPORTUNITY and BLESSING that has had a profound impact on my life and my family’s life and looking back all I can say is WHAT WAS I THINKING!!!

This little side “thing” that started as a hobby and then something for a little side income is now a full fledged BUSINESS!!

  • I work when I want from where I want and all I need is a little wi-fi
  • I still get to spend my days with my KIDDOS
  • I am surrounded by the most positive uplifting and inspirational people
  • I make AS MUCH money NOW as I did working 60+ hours in the public accounting world without the stress, commute, and much dreaded “busy season”
  • And last but not least, I am held accountable to my own goals, I am in the best shape of my life and it has impacted my ENTIRE FAMILY for the better!!!

So you may be thinking…what is this whole SUPER SATURDAY business???

Super Saturday is a quarterly event for Beachbody Coaches to get together, help motivate one another, share some great tips and best practices and gear up for what’s to come!!! It really builds on the motivation from the last event (aka-CANCUN SUCCESS CLUB trip) and serves as a chance to get together in person and catch the latest and greatest announcements and new releases from Corporate!!!

There is a Market Council in Pittsburgh (which I am super blessed to be a part of) that meets during the quarter to plan it all out. The easy part is the highlight video from Corporate…but the rest of the day is up to US! And we took things on a different route this time around!!!

Locally we have all been sweating for something bigger!!! A fellow coach on our team won an incredible battle with Stage 4 Lymphoma last year and through her struggles, remained positive, full of hope and truly inspired ALL those around her. She has been nominated for the Pittsburgh Woman of the Year and in support of her campaign, we centered our focus around raising funds for the LLS. And boy did we ever meet that goal!

We did a few of the “typical” Super Saturday things. We welcomed everyone, we shared a bit about what the proceeds were going to be used for, we recognized the audience and where they are in their business (led by yours truly on the big stage – Eeek!) we got to hear from 2 amazing people with their stories and transformations with Beachbody, we watched the Corporate video…then we got down to some business!!!

We wanted people to gain VALUE from this day and since we are fortunate to have several Elite Coaches on the Market Council and in the Pittsburgh area, not to mention 2 of the top 10 coaches from 2014, including the #1 Coach, Melanie Mitro, we held a brief training session followed by a Q&A…where people could submit questions prior to the event and hear from some of the best of the best. I mean seriously – it doesn’t get much better than that!!! We jam packed those 3 hours but I can honestly tell you I left that room – ready to DO MORE!!! Just do it 🙂

We wrapped up the event with a little LIVE Mash up led by Kam which included P90X Live, Insanity LIVE, PiYO LIVE, and a taste of the new CIZE…um, I’ll be needed some coordination tips by the time this is released in July!!!

Words cannot explain how amazing it was to be at this event and reflect on what has changed in my life as a result of joining Beachbody just one year ago!!! Never would I have thought I’d be up on stage, never would I have thought I would have MY OWN team members travel to make the trip or just be a part of something so big and so powerful…but I AM, and I am forever grateful! I cannot stress it enough – if at all possible – get to these live events!!! Endless motivation & inspiration!!!

One decision I made when I left the event was to SHARE this opportunity with as many people as possible! I truly believe anyone can ROCK this business if they have the desire to try and willingness to learn!
