Traveling and Health & Fitness goals DO mix!

Whether you’re driving a few hours to Grandma’s house or flying across the country – chances are at some point during the holidays you will travel to see your friends and family. However, just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you have to lose sight of your health and fitness goals!!!

This topic comes up a lot in my challenge groups as when I’m talking to those who are thinking about getting started on their own health and fitness journey: “I’m traveling this weekend – any tips on how to stay on track” – or – “I travel for work, its too hard to be healthy when I’m not home.” And after sharing my own thoughts, tips and ideas repeatedly I decided to share it all with you here – so you can find some advice and motivation to keep those goals close by and stay focused even when you’re not in your typical routine or living in the ideal situation!

1) EXERCISEPack your shoes and your workout clothes – Take your laptop and DVDs and workout in your room.

Chances are you don’t have to travel (far) for work each day and/or you don’t have the typical demands of things at home – so take advantage of the short commute and short(er) to-do list and get a workout in! If the weather is nice get outside! Go for a walk, enjoy the new sites, but most importantly – get moving!!!

2) STAY HYDRATED – Keep a refillable water bottle with you so you can keep hydrated and not mistake thirst for hunger!!!

One thing I hate to do (and yes, I used the word HATE) is pay for bottled water. It just irks me! But I also like to stay hydrated and I typically drink a gallon of water a day – so how to I adjust when away from home? Travel with a bottle! Most airports now have the refillable water station and a lot of hotels have water in the lobby. Its there – use it!!! You can also pick up a case of water at a drug store for close to the same cost of one bottle in the room. Plus you may get a little arm workout in carrying it back to where you’re staying!

3) FUEL YOUR BODY – Drink your Shakeology for a healthy breakfast to kickstart your day

– OR – if you are staying at a place where healthy breakfast options are available use it for a snack in the morning or afternoon so you don’t find yourself going too long between meals and binging later in the day. Eating every 2.5 – 3 hours is key – every day – so don’t skip meals and make good choices!

4) Invest in a little travel blender 

I picked one up at wal-mart. Its the hamilton beach travel blender and runs about $15! Works wonders!!! I prefer blending my Shakeology with spinach and sometimes banana but when we were on vacay in a hotel I just use water and ice from the hotel vending machine! And when I’m really on the run, I just mix with water, shake and roll!

5) Keep healthy snacks with you

Easier said than done right?!?! But seriously – plan out your meals each day! If you have a fridge where you are,  your options are endless but you can always pack oatmeal, apples, protein bars and almonds without the need for a fridge! Depending on how long you’re going to be away, consider a trip to a local grocery store and stock up! Don’t let excuses get in your way of your goals!!!

6) Share your goals with those you’re with

Often times traveling results in more meals out, and more treats lurking around – it just happens! Share your goals with your family and/or co-workers so you don’t have to hide what you’re doing. Be proud that you’re making choices to be HEALTHIER and HAPPIER not only for yourself but those you love! Invite them to the store with you or enjoy a morning workout together! Who knows – you just may inspire someone else to make a change too!

Another week down and another week stronger! I know it may sound silly but just two weeks in and I can already see improvements. My max out times are improving and there are moves that I couldn’t do in week 1 that I nailed in week 2. This seems crazy to me!

Week 2 day 1I will admit – although I haven’t missed a workout, I had a few struggles this week with the nutrition department! I’m sure you can relate…A party here, dinner out there and the usual things that come with the week before Christmas! But boy, I can feel the difference! Even though I used my usual tactics like drinking my shakeology before I go and drinking more than my required amount of water, we had our MOMs Club Christmas party where I enjoyed a few too many cookies, we had a late afternoon trip to the mall that resulted in dinner out and a cheesecake shared with my hubby, a girls day lunch at the Olive Garde – THOSE BREADSTICKS!!!! Need I say more?! And I can’t tell you the last time I had nachos but Dave and Busters nailed that loaded platter – and my fingers can feel the increase in salt!!!

So here’s to week 3! I cannot change the week before but I can certainly focus on the week ahead! It will be another challenging one in regards to nutrition but that just means I’m going to need to really focus on the first half of the week and keep my goals on top of my mind through “the most wonderful time of the year!”

So what’s my plan????

Here is my HOLIDAY WEEK GAMEPLAN and my tips for you to help stay on track:

1) MORNING WORKOUTS – I’ll be continuing with my early morning workouts, and yes, even on Christmas morning! Why not? Just because its a holiday doesn’t mean you should sacrifice your own self health!

2) SHAKEOLOGY – I’ll still start EVERY morning off with Shakeology. I know how much it helps my energy and cravings…which will need a little extra control this week! It will go with me when I travel and I’ll keep packets with me so I don’t have any excuse not to eat healthy while we’re “busy” this week! Besides, it tastes like a treat anyway!!!

3) BE OPEN – I’ll share my plan with my family – and all of you! Having others to help keep me accountable always helps me reach my goals!!! Hopefully I’ll even have some company for my workouts!

4) BALANCE – I’ll be doing a little 80/20 with my nutrition. 80% of the time I am going to be SPOT and the other 20% I will enjoy my Christmas favorites!! But that’s it – JUST my favorites. I know there will be lots and lots of goodies all around but they’re not all my favorites. So I’ll pick and choose and enjoy my indulgences. I’ll pack my snacks, especially when traveling, and load up on the veggies every chance I get!

5) WATER – Keep up with my 1 gallon per day! I’ve been drinking about 1 gallon a day for a few weeks now. I fill my Shakeology shaker cup 6 times and I’m there. Keeping my water intake up helps avoid the mistake of thirst for hunger!

6) HAVE FUN! – I will enjoy the holidays. I will enjoy the time iwht my family, I will enjoy the energy I feel when I start my day off right and fuel my body, and I will enjoy those little buckeyes – in a reasonable portion 🙂

7) PACK THE DVDs – I’ll be traveling with my Insanity Max:30 DVDs. I love how portable my home workout programs are but this one is even easier as I don’t even have to worry about any equipment! I just need a little space and I’m all set!

Week 3’s meal plan is certainly a bit different but even with the holiday and travels I’m still planning out! I will not surrender and throw my hands up on the week in its entirety! (This meal plan is also 21-day fix approved in addition to Insanity Max:30 -just a little extra bonus!)

Insanity Max: 30 Journey

A sunday well spent brings a week of content, Maegan Blinka, Insanity Max 30 prep

Well here goes – My planning is complete and I am mentally prepared to take on Insanity Max:30!

I have to share – this was not part of my Holiday fitness “plan”. I was all set to do the 21-day fix up with my challengers up until Christmas and then dabble in the Les Mills Pump, Les Mills Combat and Turbo Fire programs  until the 21-day Fix Extreme was released in February. I watched the Insanity Max: 30 preview videos, I heard people in the test group talk about it, and I just didn’t really think this was going to be a program for me. I was thinking more along the lines of a “maybe I’ll sub the Friday – Cardio Fix – for an Insanity Max:30” workout here and there.

Years ago I watched my husband try to do the original insanity and quite frankly it just looked too hard. But when I had an opportunity to work out with our team BeachboMaegan Blinka, Cardio Challenge, Insanity Max 30 Meal Plan, Insanity Max 30 testgroup, Insanity Max 30 workouts, Insanity Max 30 Week 1 workout schedule, Max out, shaun T fitness, find your max, insanity, insane results, push yourselfdy Coaches last Sunday I couldn’t pass it up – but I also didn’t think I’d really enjoy it. Well….30 minutes later I was hooked and counting down the hours until I could purchase it myself! I’ve been regularly working out now for over 9 months and I think I am ready for a more intense program! Plus the whole fact that there is a modifier really helps ease the mind 🙂

I couldn’t “wait for a Monday” to start and I gave the Cardio Challenge a whirl last Friday. I first maxed out at 8:35 and then a few more times after that but I LOVED the workout and I felt amazing when it was done. No weights, no equipment – just you along with your body and mind! I also did the pulse workout Saturday and loved the ab workout and stretching and strengthening!!!

So I’m shifting my plans and committing to myself and my cyber world that I will do the complete 60 day program…and Day 1 is TOMORROW!

I know what I need to do to succeed – and that is all done in the Kitchen! And this is another reason why i was so excited to jump in…this meal plan is so similar to the 21-day fix meal plan. And most people who know me know this is what got it ALLLL started for me with my journey in February. The portion containers just make it so easy to follow and adapt no matter what situation you’re in!!! The initial starting calculation is a bit different – actually even easier – but the concept is the same. Eat the right foods in the right portions and use the containers to make it as easy as possible!!!

So in an effort to really get my mind set I woke up early today (on my rest day!) and made my week 1 meal plan!

I like to include my workouts on there so I know in advance what I am going to be doing! Its my own little reference guide on multiple levels! I also like to look at my week ahead and put that splurge meal on my calendar! This week it will definitely be my MOMs night out with my girlfriends Tuesday night! You’ll notice I don’t have any yellows on my meal plan earlier that day – and that’s because we’re going out – Italian style!!! I will still practice portion control but I’m not going to be unrealistic either – I will focus all day, have fun and without a doubt – PRESS PLAY!

After I finished my plan, I enjoyed breakfast with my kiddos I headed off to the grocery store.

I already had some staples at home including oatmeal, sweet potatoes, pasta, etc…but you’ll notice we eat a lot of the same foods…yogurt,  bananas, apples, eggs, lots of fresh produce, some frozen veggies and gluten free bread and almond milk for the hubs! I’ll occasionally add a splash of milk to my shakeo but when following the portion containers I’m not willing to give up a yellow so I just stick to water in my Shakeology! It tastes so good no matter what way its blended!!!

I can’t wait to get started with my test group TOMORROW and kick off with a bang! I know its going to be hard but the struggle is so worth it!!! That feeling of success will last a lifetime!

New month – New week!!!

Anyone stuck in a food coma after the long holiday weekend? I’ll be honest….getting my workouts in was no problem-I even doubled up a few days but oh the struggle for me has been in the kitchen! I love sweets and have such a hard time just saying “no”- my 80/20 rule has been drifting more towards a 60/40 and I can feel it and see it! Its those darn COOKIES and I know that struggle will continue to tempt me all month long as December is here and the jingle bells start ringing and the Christmas cookies are baking! For me – its time to FOCUS!!!! We have just over 3 weeks before Christmas and Insanity Max 30 is being released TODAY!!! It’s time to focus on my nutrition-who’s with me???

I absolutely love finding ways to take old favorites and spin them into healthy, delicious meals! After failing a few times, I finally had success with my Vegetti gadget from Amazon and let me tell you – zucchini pasta is delicious!!!

This meal took all of 5 minutes start to finish and I topped it with some ground turkey mixed with all natural crushed tomatoes – and got myself a very healthy, fast, filling lunch!!! 
 
WHAT YOU NEED:
(per person/per serving)
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1/4 pound cooked pound of ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • sea salt and pepper
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
  1. Heat oil in pan over medium heat
  2. Spiral the zucchini and sauté for 3-4 minutes with desired sea salt and pepper
  3. Top with meat sauce
  4. ENJOY!
*For all my 21-day fixers – this meal would be 1-2 green containers (zucchini and tomatoes…assuming you use the tomatoes that have no added salt or sugar!!!) and 1 red and 1 teaspoon!

Finding the time to value YOURSELF

Do you value your own health and fitness?

 Ok, so maybe its easy to immediately, quickly, answer YES.  But if say “yes” – can you say your actions meet your words? Do you treat your body the way it should be treated? Do you fuel your body with healthy foods? Or do you choose convenience and cost over true health benefits? Do you make sure you get some form of exercise for at least 30 minutes a day at least 5 days a week? Or do you make excuses as to why you can’t find the time to get up and get moving?

Alright – so that was a lot of questions but I really want you to stop for a minute. If you think about your answers to those questions and you really do act as if you value your own health and fitness – then good for you!!! You are LIVING and LEADING a healthier more fulfilling life and chances are you generally feel pretty darn good about yourself! I never understood my husband’s “all or nothing” attitude. He was either riding the healthy living train or not. I on the other hand had the “well I worked out which means I EARNED a bowl of ice cream” attitude. And truth is – you can’t burn off an unhealthy diet! Take it from me – I did the T25 workouts for almost 6 months but didn’t change a thing in with my nutrition. And yes, you guessed it, my results matched my efforts – I DIDN’T LOSE A POUND! And I was frustrated. I didn’t understand why other people were getting results and I was at a stand still. We started coming up with ways to take old favorites and turn them into healthy clean meals we could all enjoy! Not only did we both lose weight but we both FELT better, had more energy to play with our kids, and we were actually eating more food – but in the right portions – and at the right times! As we continued to embrace this change and clean eating, the more it simply became OUR LIFESTYLE.

We are a clean eating family. We focus on healthy portion sizes, we eat 2.5-3 hours apart, there are very little to no processed foods, and we drink a heck of a lot of WATER. I’ll start by saying as I began this whole Beachbody workout routine I remember seeing posts from other people who just LOVED this shake and I couldn’t possibly think of how some powdered “meal replacement shake” could really be THAT GOOD and REALLY worth the it. Well you know what they say – don’t knock it until you try it!!! It took a few go arounds but once I decided to give it a try and committed to drinking it for one week straight to “see what the hype was about” my only thought after those 7 days was “Why did I wait so long!” This would have been a godsend in those very first early newborn baby stages!!!!

This stuff was what I needed!!!! I was struggling to balance my newborn who thought sleep was the worst possible way to spend his time and a busy toddler who just wanted to go go GO. Sitting down to eat any meal was simply never going to happen – but I could shake up a shake or blend something creative in the blender and fuel up while tending to the needs of my kids without having to sacrifice my own nutrition! And now mom doesn’t have to be the last one to eat 🙂  I used to be the Queen of “granola bars” but if you are one to grab one and go – check out the label on some of the most popular “breakfast bars” – you can’t even pronounce half the ingredients!!! They’re essentially glorified candy bars! Needless to say, Shakeology quickly became my “duh” meal. Life just doesn’t make sense without it!!! With my busy schedule I need something that I can depend on every single day. Its your choice. But do me a favor – and consider: Can you imagine how you’ll FEEL if you decide to commit today??? Imagine how your clothes will fit…imagine how you’ll carry yourself…imagine how you’ll FEEL. Then let me know if you’re ready!

  1.  Start small – make a list of what you need to change and start making little changes each week. I’m not saying you have to jump right and start working out 7/days a week eating only 100% clean foods, etc… But start making small changes. Become aware of the ingredients in the foods you’re putting into your body. Chances are if you can’t read the label or pronounce the word you probably shouldn’t be eating it! Give yourself a self evaluation on your exercise, nutrition and water in take – what needs the most attention? Make a new goal/positive change each week. For example, your first step may be to rid your house of all the “bad/unhealthy” foods, next you may need to start getting 30 minutes of exercise at least 3x a week, then increase your water intake and/or decrease/eliminate soda or any other sugary drink you consume. And yes – this counts diet soda too! As you continue to make these changes, add in something new until you’ve transformed your LIFESTYLE.
  1.  If you can’t control the sweets – keep them out of the house. Ok – this is where I struggle the most. My daughter and I LOVE to bake.

    My son naps, we bake. Its just our “thing”. Its fun and we get a yummy treat out of it! But let’s be honest – no one needs dessert everyday! Besides – it certainly doesn’t do anything to benefit our kids! We’ve been able to shift gears and start doing art crafts during naps and when she REALLY wants to bake I try to take a healthy spin on it like my sweet potato brownies. And if we are going to splurge and make some chocolate chip cookies I will do it on a day when we can take them somewhere and share them so one cookie doesn’t turn into a lunch filled with cookies for her or me! Then they’re gone and we can all focus again!!!

  1.  If you struggle with finding the time in your day to make healthy meals then replace 1 meal a day with shakeology.  Why??? I’ll ask you this way – WHY NOT??? Healthy Holiday Goals

Thanksgiving is fast approaching which means Christmas is right around the corner. How did that even happen? No seriously – how did that happen??? I swear as I get older the days/months/years go by so much faster! Yes I get it, time actually moves at the same rate all year round, but my goodness its just crazy!!!

Looking ahead, I can see the holidays being a challenge when it comes to my health and fitness goals. I have a feeling I’m not alone here. The weather is getting cooler, we are covered in layers making it a bit easier to hide behind a scarf or a cute jacket and our daylight time is shortened, making it that much more tempting to just lay in bed and SNOOZE! The weekends are filled with holiday parties and the spread of food present at these family holiday meals is undoubtedly going to be amazing! And of course there’s the Christmas cookies! Don’t even get me started on the cookies…

Anyone else feeling my pain??? I know some of you have to be! On average, most people will put on 7-10 lbs during the holiday season, and I for one do not plan on being part of that! But that doesn’t mean its not going to be a challenge, something I will have to work for. Between traveling, school parties for my kiddos, work parties, social get togethers, and being surrounded by delicious temptations for practically 6 weeks straight, food becomes used as a form of comfort rather than the fuel it is designed to be resulting in overeating and poor choices!

In an effort to keep myself accountable and not be in that average 7-10 pound weight gain category, I’m setting some big goals to reach over this holiday season so I stay on track, can enjoy the meals, but not over do it!

In my challenge groups, I always tell my challengers to make their goals public. When you share your goals you’re more likely to stick to them. So I’m taking my own advice. So this is me, telling YOU my goals, and inviting you into this journey!

Holiday health and fitness goals:

  1. Complete the 21 Day Fix.I felt my best when I strictly followed the 21-day fix eating plan and workouts back in February. I went on to complete a few more rounds in addition to PIYO, T25 and most recently P90 but once I met my weight goal I started getting a bit more lenient in my food choices. Generally still healthy ones, but more splurges and slowly but surely my weight started creeping back up! I will continue with P90 through Thanksgiving and pick up with my HOT FOR THE HOLIDAYS challenge group on December 3rd for a full round as we head into Christmas! And I’m using my round 1 pics as MY motivation to KEEP pushing even when it gets hard.
  2. Be active 7 days/week! I’ll be honest – when I don’t do a workout or toss in a walk/short run I tend to get lazy all around. My workouts make me happy! They get my engergy pumping, my heart rate up and I just feel GOOD! I will workout 7 days a week through this holiday season including at least one active stretch day (Hello YOGA FIX!!!!) PIYO_Week_6_day_3Small
  3. Drink one gallon of water every day!I already drink A LOT of water but I feel this is going to be even more important through the holidays. Its easy to track – 6 shaker cups full of water and BAM – DONE!!! I know this is going to result in me heading to the potty hourly but I’m also hopeful this will help me keep my alcohol intake on the low side. In general, I really don’t drink a lot of alcohol but if I’m going to do it this is usually the time of year that hits home the most!
  4. Do a family “Turkey Trot” on Thanksgiving It would be easy to make excuses not to workout on Thanksgiving day but I already know I make better decisions and feel better when my day starts off with a good sweat sesh…so what better way to kick off the holiday than with a little run with my family! Making the commitment now will helps us all hold each other accountable.
  5. Limit my sweets at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner! This has been a BIG struggle for me in the past. I love DESSERTS – specifically cookies. I can pass on the turkey and mashed potatoes and corn and stuffing but I tend to have no self-control when it comes to sweets. I mean literally, I will sit there and eat til I cannot breathe anymore. Gross, I know! But, this year I WANT that to CHANGE! I will have some cookies, but I will have self control and I am going to use my Shakeology as my “sweet tooth” fix for the day. I mean, seriously, why not! It tastes like a cheat meal – but its not…its a full meal replacement nutritious shake, gives me energy, provides me with all the nutrition I need, keeps me full for nearly 3 hours, and takes care of my daily vitamin – Oh, and it takes about 1 minute to make! Talk about a “fast food value meal”!!!

There you have it. These are my TOP 5 Holiday health and fitness goals. I haven’t missed a workout in MONTHS but my nutrition is and always has been my biggest struggle – I LOVE sweets!!! But – I am determined to make this my healthiest holiday season ever.

I will enjoy my time with my family without focusing solely on the food around us but rather being thankful for the changes I’ve made in my life and my family’s life so that we are all healthier and happier! And – I would love for you to do the same! I encourage you to make your own goals – from now until the end of the year – how do you want to close out 2014? Your goals don’t have to be the same as mine, but you should have something in mind to guide you through this food-filled, tempting season!!!

BUSY MOM TIP: Find something that your kids enjoy and will keep them contained, so you can FOCUS. Whether its for 10 minutes, 20 minutes or gasp – a half hour! Happy, quiet kiddos results in a very produtive mama!!!

Ok so I know I’m busy, you’re busy, what mama out there isn’t “busy”?!?! The to-do list is never ending and we are always looking for a way to maximize our time and knock those items off our to-do list in the most effective way! One thing I’ve realized is it all comes down to balance. Balancing your priorities, your time, and where you need to be at each moment each day.

I had a fabulous weekend away cheering on my mom as she rocked out her first ever marathon in Baltimore but now its time to get back to the grind! The weekend away was fun, but there’s a giant pile of laundry to catch up on, things to get ready for the week ahead, grocery shopping that desperately needs taken care of and a workout that cannot be skipped…as with any fun family weekend this one as well resulted in a few extra calories ❤ All well worth it!!!

I admit, I did snooze…well I snoozed twice, but then I got up, downed my E&E and got my sweat one with a little P90! Starting my day with a workout is the best way to get up, wake up, and get on with my day!!!!

Regardless of how early I get up, I almost never get done what I need to do. Ok well, let me rephrase that. I always get done what I NEED to do but rarely everything I WANT to do! We basically came home last night and just left everything as is. So as a means to catch up around the house this morning I wanted to have something fun for the kiddos to do after breakfast that would keep them enterntained and allow me to get a few things done! Soooo…after my workout I prepped a little painting craft for the kids.

My daughter never turns down painting and let’s be honest, her little bro just wants to do whatever his big sis is doing! While I’m not quite ready to turn him lose with a paint brush and blank canvas I remembered seeing this idea on Pinterest where you put the paint in a ziplock bag and tape it down. Seemed easy enough yet I had never tried it! So while the little ones continued sleeping I got the paint brushes and paper out for Aubrie and and poured the paint into the bag. I had to prep this one before they got up because if I hadn’t I would have had two little monkeys climbing on my legs as I tried to get everything together and by the time I finished one of them would have certainly lost interest!!!

With a busy morning of gymnastics and a trip to the grocery store I knew I was limited to my freezer stock for tonight’s dinner! I pulled out one of my favorite crockpot meals – Black Bean and Corn Chicken Salsa. This is so easy…freezer to crockpot to dinner table – easy peezy!

We went on with our usual morning routine and when I offered out the paint brushes both kids were beyond excited!!! Aubrie was perfectly content for a solid 45 minutes only needing more brushes, a birdhouse and more paper to keep her satisfied! I’m not going to say it lasted quite as long as I had hoped for Colt but I got a good 15 minutes and well…15 mintutes of both kiddos content and contained meant I was able to unload the diswasher, switch over the laundry and even grab a quick call with one of my coaches – Pinterest craft = success!

I was even able to squeeze in a few more minutes of work while Colt worked hard to take every single item out of all the art table bins and Aubrie continued working on her masterpiece!

it may get messy

Things may have gotten a bit messy, but well, our house is usually messy! There are always toys on the floor, crumbs under the table and our toy bin is typically empty with the books spread across the floor. But secretly – I love it!!!! When Daddy walks in the door with the response” Wow, looks like you guys had fun today” you know it was a successful day! We had playtime, art time, story time, a successful trip to the grocery store (thank you Giant Eagle for inventing the Eagles Nest) and we all got done what NEEDed to get done! Finding that balance is an ongoing task but one I will continue to work towards perfection!
