I am so excited I may be having my own little dance party in the living room!!! I am down to less than $2000 in student loans and I will be DONE by the end of the year – mark my words!!! To some this may seem like a lot and to some this may seem like no big deal…but this is so huge for me!!! Kyle and I have never been a “my money/your money” family. What’s mine is his and what’s his is mine-from the beginning! So when we made the decision that I would not return to work after having Colt there was never that thought that I wasn’t going to have my own $$$. The only thing that bothered me was that I wasn’t going to be paying off MY student loans. I took overload courses and summer school every year so I could get my double major in the shortest amount of time and minimize the money I had to borrow. I did my best to pay for as much of my schooling as I went…I waitressed 4-5 days a week for all 4 years, I tutored for 3 of the 4 years and I was pretty good with my money but I still managed to leave there with a pretty LARGE chunk of debt. I got a great job after college but it was still difficult to pay much more than the minimum payment. Once I left KPMG, I didn’t like that I was no longer “making” money to pay off my school loans. However I wasn’t willing to give up my stay at home mom life either – so on with life we went!

Enter beachbody coaching 7 months ago… I started sharing what I was doing with others and what started as a thought of something very small to maybe help out some of my close friends and family and maybe cover my own cost of Shakeology compounded into so much more!! Soon enough I set my next financial goal – To pay off my loans by my one year anniversary date. Still perhaps a bit of a stretch – but it was my goal. Fast forward a little bit further and I switched that date to the end of the 2014 – nearly 4 years early – and I know with continued hard work and consistency I CAN DO THIS!!!

Ok..ok…ok…so I workout daily…

But you know what?!?! I absolutely LOVE chocolate. And I LOVE peanut butter. And oh my put them together and WATCH OUT!

Thing is…I also like to be fit and healthy. When I eat clean I feel good. And when I feel good I am more confident. When I am confident I am happier all around so…how do I manage to stay on track?! I sweat daily and absolutely love finding ways to satisfy MY sweet tooth cravings and not undoing all the hard work I put in!

As my hubby and I sat around Saturday night we were looking for a sweet treat. Something new, something different, and preferably something that combines chocolate and peanut butter!! So many of the recipes we found were loaded with sugar and that’s just not our style!

Kyle came across this recipe and I knew we had to give it a try.

Inside Out Shakeology Peanut Butter Cups:

(makes 2 servings)

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • 2 tsp Chocolate Shakeology
  • 2 tsp unrefined coconut oil, melted
  • 2 TBS PB2
  • 2 TBS water

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

1. Combine oil and PB2 in a small bowl; mix well. Set aside.

2. Combine Shakeology and water in a small bowl; mix until it has a pudding like consistency. Set aside

3. Coat two foil muffin liners evenly with half of the peanut butter mixture. Top evenly with Shakeology mixture

4. Freeze for 30 minutes or until firm

My personal take on these: They don't "taste" like a traditional, artificial ingredient filled candy bar...but they are delicious! You can definitely taste a int of coconut from the oil and I think they would be more peanut buttery if you used all natural peanut butter rather than PB2...however for a 64 calorie treat, these can't be beat!

P90 Coming SOON!

I am stoked about Beachbody’s latest Home Fitness Program, P90 by none other than the amazing Tony Horton!!!!!  I first heard about this program at Beachbody’s Coach Summit in Vegas in June and I was pumped!  My husband and I (tried) p90X before our wedding over 5 years ago but I just flat out couldn’t do it!!!! There were about 3 workouts I felt comfortable with and the other ones just were just too hard! We ended up doing a workout here and there but never completed “the program” never seeked support and never saw the end results!!!

We jumped on P90X3 when it was released. The greatest appeal was the 30 minutes workouts. Let’s be honest, Tony Horton is an incredible trainer and its no secret that if you follow his plan you will succeed…but the key is you have to do the work!!!  I’ve dabbled in those workouts but to be honest, I don’t have the strength to go right into P90X3! I know I can get there…I’m just not there yet!

 

Have you ever tried any of the P90X series programs??? If you did it and completed it – congratulations…the programs are HARD!  But if you did it and failed at it – think about why you failed? Workouts too long? You were quite ready to commit? Didn’t have the right support team around you? Just not physically fit to do it all??? I may have a solution for you!  This new program may be just what you need to build a base level of fitness so that you can complete something like p90X and get into the best shape of your life! What are the workouts like?

The workouts are not super intense, with continuous pounding on your joints.  It’s really pretty simple – simple cardio and simple workouts in just 25 minutes a day for 90 days to  completely transform your body and change your way of living. And just like all of Beachbody’s programs, it comes with a simple nutrition guide that is going to help you clean up your daily food intake and focus on the right foods to fuel your body for health!  We use multiple recipes from the prior P90 nutrition guide and I am excited to see what this one has in store as well!

What equipment do you need?

  • A  set of weights (dumbbells- when picking the weight, make sure you can do 3 sets of approx 12 reps) … Beginners I would use 5 lbs and intermediate and/advanced 10-20 lbs. Power blocks work great because you can add weight as you continue to build strength!!
  • Resistance bands (great alternative to dumbbells too, and serve as your back workout so you don’t have to do the pull-ups!

 


Who would this program be perfect for?

This program is really suitable for anyone – any age level – and any fitness level. Whether you’re looking for a break from your typical routine of high impact plyo…or whether you’re just getting started and need to build your foundation. Your focus may be weight loss and it may be muscle toning and building. Or you may already be in good health and just be looking for something new to add to your routine. What is the test group??

It is a closed Facebook group where no one but the members of the group can see what is being posted. I will walk you through how to set realistic goals for yourself, how to meal plan, prep, how to set yourself up for success, then each day you log into the group for a post of the day, motivation, recipes and tips.  We will track progress through our online group and you will succeed!  Trust me, if you commit I will meet you half way!  I won’t let you give up! Fall may not have officially started but the leaves are changing, football is in full force and there are pumpkins everywhere! My husband was pushing for an Apple Pie blizzard from Dairy Queen but my lack of self control told me one quick trip through the drive through and the chance of me leaving with only one in hand was slim. So I started thinking of a late night snack that would fill his void for ice cream and keep my goals in tact…and this happened…

Caramel Apple

*8oz of liquid (I used unsweetened almond milk but you could also use water, or a combo of milk and water)

*1 Scoop VANILLA Shakeology

*1/2 of a green apple, sliced

*1 tsp caramel extract

*Lots of ice!!!!

Blend until smooth and enjoy!!!

NOTE: I like to eat mine with a spoon, so I always fill with about 8-10 ounces of ice and “crush ice” on my blender fist then hit the “mix” for about 30 seconds. It comes out thick and smooth – just like ice cream but without all the added stuff!!!!

PIYO Program in Review

Ok, ok, so if you’ve been following me since week 1 you may be thinking thank goodness this girl is finished with these recaps!!! But hopefully not, hopefully you’ve enjoyed reading through my experience with the new PIYO program and if you think you’re up for the PIYO challenge, I want you give it a try!

I can’t say enough good things about this program. I enjoyed the switch in my regular exercise routine, my knees appreciated the break from all the jumping around that I typically do, and I noticed a significant improvement in my flexibility and coordination.

Day 1 vs. Day 60 of PIYO

Some of these moves were tricky for me but I found watching my own videos of my workouts really helped me focus in on what I was doing right and wrong and where I really needed to put forth a little more effort to improve. After all, a lot of these moves were totally new!!! It didn’t happen overnight, but week by week I saw myself improving in different areas and I will happily say although my 8 weeks with PIYO are complete, the workouts will remain tossed into my regular routine!!! They’re different, fun and add a little twist to everyday exercise!!!

Honestly – when I look back I can’t believe how BAD my coordination was in the beginning!! I remember when I did that first “PIYO FLIP”, if you can even call that top picture a PIYO Flip, and I actually thought I nailed it – WRONG!!!!!

The PIYO Kick through was another one…for weeks I had no idea what Chalene was telling me to do! My hand/feet match ups were off…but I still kept going. I pushed myself. I’d pause the DVD, rewind, watch it again just trying to understand what I was to do. And no joke – it pretty much took me up until the end but I think I finally got it 🙂 However I can’t quite say that I ever really nailed the PiYO cross…guess you can’t win them all right?!

Another important thing I learned from this program is how important your alignment is. Holding each pose  correctly makes such a difference! You have to squeeze that booty, squeeze those abs and hold it until you’re shaking and you can’t shake any more!!!

I’ve heard some people express concern that they didn’t feel like they were getting a “good workout” in with PIYO and all I can say – is trust the program!!! Like so many things in life – you will get out what you put in. So don’t just go through the motions. Focus. Commit yourself to that DVD for 20 minutes or 30 minutes or all 48 minutes of DRENCH, and be present in the moment and hold each pose as cued, squeeze each muscle and squeeze them hard. When Chalene says to squat, get as low as you can and squeeze every muscle as you stand back up. When you lunge – go back as far as you can and focus as you raise and lower back down. And I promise if you do this you’ll be shaking through that elbow plank and feeling that muscle burn and seeing the results soon after!!! 

Now, I didn’t have a crazy physical transformation – but I didn’t expect one. I was at MY goal weight when I started so I wasn’t trying to lose but rather maintain my weight while gaining strength and flexibility. And I’m happy to say I reached my goals!!! My weight dropped .2 pounds and I lost 4 inches, primarily around my hips and waist, with small decreases in my arms. I was able to increase the number of push ups I can do on my toes from 20 before PIYO to 32 at the end and my goal is to continue working on my push ups and reach 50 by the end of the year!!!

PIYO Progress Week 8

And….I….DID IT!

I successfully completed 8 weeks of PIYO and absolutely loved the change to my workout routine!!!

Week 8 went a little something like this:

NOTE: I pushed my rest day to Sunday because that’s what worked best for ME – the joy of making my own workout schedule at home! 

I didn’t introduce anything new on the menu this week – although I did repeat the stuffed peppers from last week and the buffalo chicken quesadillas – always a hit with the entire fam!!!!

And per usual, turkey burgers were on the menu! I added some grilled onions and let me tell you – the additional flavor was amazing!!! A little all natural salsa (courtesy of SAMs club) and you have one heck of a flavorful dinner! And better yet – make them in bulk and you just may get some lunches and/or an additional dinner – BONUS!

And the week wouldn’t be complete without my daily dose of dense nutrition!!! I truly CRAVE this stuff. Despite the fact that I’ve had my shakeology EVERY DAY since February 24th, I still cannot get over the fact that something SO GOOD for you tastes like a dessert! Craziness I say, craziness!!! And yes, I blend it nice and thick so I can eat it with a spoon – I’ll take a little ice cream for breakfast 🙂

Now to the burn….Although I truly love the DRENCH workout – I find that 48 minute length difficult to commit! But no worries – I nailed it not only once – but twice!

 Of all things, I’d have to say my balance is my greatest improvement. My balance has never been bad but I find myself able to hold poses longer and balance better now that I have completed this program. And I am certainly getting stronger!!!

I had a great week and when I look back I am able to see how far I’ve come! Excited to get the final results together and see a complete – start to finish!!!

3 day refresh, beachbody refresh, cleanse with food

3 day refresh-here we go again!

The last 6 weeks were filled with parties, travels, amusement parks, baseball games, family gatherings, birthdays and our 5-year wedding anniversary! And while these were all fun times they all had one thing in common – DELICIOUS FOOD – and A LOT of it!!! 

I continued my workout regimen but a few bites here and a trip to get fro-yo there…an extra helping of this and another scoop of that were starting to add up! My clothes were feeling tighter and more importantly I was starting to feel more tired. I know it well, but this just reinforces that abs are made in the kitchen! You can workout all you want but its the nutrition that matters most!

I starred at the box for a few days before I set my start date – 8/13, 8/14 and 8/15.

Time to get serious…

I had done the refresh once before so I knew what to expect. I knew what options from the meal plan worked for me and what didn’t – so guess what I did – ate the same thing for 3 days!!!! May seem silly but I believe the old saying “if its not broke don’t fix it”. 

Here’s a summary of what my food looked like:

Breakfast – Shakeology

Mid-morning Snack – Fiber Sweep

Lunch – Salad with 1/3 cup blueberries and Vanilla refresh with 6 strawberries (yes, I split up my fruit so I could enjoy some in my shake and some with my salad – this isn’t my first rodeo!!!)

Afternoon Snack – cucmbers and hummus

Dinner – Lemon green beans with almonds and a vanilla refresh with cinnamon

You’ll note there’s no picture of the fiber sweep – well that’s because I learned that lesson the hard way. Its best to MIX and CHUG – FAST! I didn’t mind the taste but the texture is a bit odd and it thickens as it sits. 

I enjoyed 2 glasses of my iced green tea each day and drank more water than I though was ever possible! I remember last time being so hungry that first day but then it subsided by day 2…however this time seemed a bit easier!

My results are not jaw dropping…however I did lose 2 pounds and a total of 4 inches between my hips, waist and bellybutton. And above all else – I felt better – which was why I was doing this in the first place 🙂
