An amputee’s journey to CONFIDENCE

I first connected with Cheryl in December 2014.

A then random connection on social media – turned into a challenger in my challenge groups – turned into one of the most INSPIRATIONAL women I’ve ever met.

Cheryl has had an incredible journey and I am honored to share it today…

In November 2012 her right arm was amputated and miraculously saved and replanted. She has no bicep, 1/2 a tricep and limited use of her hand. She had lost 60 pounds and then started having surgeries again and gained 40 back.

She is someone who enjoys exercise but needed help to get going again. That’s where I came in!!!

She knew she couldn’t always do all the moves of all the programs but she was willing to get STARTED – TRY – and use the nutrition program and daily Shakeology to fuel her body.

She had struggled with emotional eating but found exercise fills that need and she began to THRIVE…

“I’m Cheryl and have been participating in Maegan’s challenge groups for over a year. She asked me to share how participating in the groups have impacted my life.

First off, I was embarrassed about how I looked and where I let myself get to. That’s what was the catalyst for me reaching out to Maegan.

So I joined a challenge group and started drinking shakeology. I swallowed my pride and become vulnerable to the process she introduced me to and when I did I was received without judgement and got support ….. REAL support!

Daily atta girls when I checked in and posted. When I stumbled I received input on how to accept my slip and make it better next time…… tools for my continued success. I realized TOGETHER we are strong!

That’s why I still participate a year later; it’s the support and knowing I’m not alone. Knowing there’s somebody in the group who has been there, is there or will be there. By participating I get help but I give help by openly sharing my journey .

I’ve come a LONG way and still have a ways to go so I still habitually post my accountability sweaty selfie and check in about how my day went because the process WORKS!

74 pounds later I can say I’m proof!

I’m off the insulin, the blood pressure meds, the anxiety and depression meds….I’m HEALTHY, HAPPY and have met some amazing, supportive women who have my back….. all I had to do was get over myself and honestly give the process a chance.

“I’m Jen and I’ve struggled with weight my entire life. I did the yo-yo diets and even lost 90lbs unhealthily. I had a baby (now 12) and got married. Life was great. My life spiraled out of control February 8th 2008, I gained 100lbs shortly after my husband died. I lost my house, job and myself. Food and being lazy were my world!
I’ve tried losing weight no success I gained more. My boyfriend’s co-workers sister-in-law told me about BB and Shakeology, she said could help me get what I wanted. On September 2014 I joined my first challenge group, 21 Day fix I believe that’s when I was introduced to Maegan. I wasn’t sure what to expect. They said post how your day was, workouts, water, food and shake. I was like OK no one is gonna care what I have to say. Boy, was I wrong. I lost I think 12lbs and gained so much inspiration from this group. I joined every challenge group offered after that.

 Wow, the overwhelming support you get from people you never met telling you great job or I understand…..meant the world to me. I now understand that I’m not alone in my journey and I can do this.
I look at these groups as a way to help myself when I feel like quiting and help others when I feel empowered. It’s a great way to share my concerns, struggles, recipes and just how I feel.

As of today I’ve lost 73lbs, it’s a slow process for me due to my feet, hips and back not cooperating. Someone wise (my daughter) told me that slow and steady wins the race. I’m 25lbs from my goal weight, I’m able to do real push-ups and have a heart full of inspiration.”

Behind the scenes of a Challenge group

I am so excited to kick off my first ever “What is a Challenge Group – LIVE LOOK” – closed accountability group on Facebook!

I am coming up on my 3 year anniversary of participating and then hosting online Fitness challenges and I can tell you first hand it has spoken VOLUMES in my personal Health & Wellness journey. I honestly don’t know where I would be if I had stopped after that first round of the 21-day fix back in 2014…or heck even after a year. ACCOUNTABILITY IS KEY!

I was able to get to the point where I could carve out that 30 minute and time for myself – but controlling what was on my plate – going in my body -the other 23.5 hours of the day is where I realized THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.

But here’s the deal: when you surround yourself with others with similar goals – and struggles and strengths and weaknesses you learn to FALL DOWN – AND – GET BACK UP…TOGETHER!

And this is what I want to show people through this group!!!

The same key aspects that I teach in my full accountability groups will be introduced in this group as well!

FITNESS + SUPPORT + NUTRITION = RESULTS!!!

FITNESS:

Each participant will enroll in a trial membership of the Beachbody Club which provides online STREAMING to HUNDREDS of workouts!

I have shared this simplified meal plan with my participants and I will walk them through how I plan out my meals, how the prep all goes down and how I maximize on those leftovers.

What is a Challenge Group: Live Look

Time Hop reminded me that around this same time – 3 Years ago today I was asking for prayers as we were rushed to Children’s Hospital holding tightly to VERY sick little boy.

Now: You may be thinking: Soooooo: What does this have in common with the title “What is a Challenge Group: Live Look” – keep reading – there’s a connection I PROMISE!

That day was a WHIRLWIND!

Colt’s deteriorating health was dismissed as “a bad cold” before we got in to see HIS doctor the following day who quickly sent us by ambulance to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh to ensure he got the best care.

We received his diagnosis: Pneomonia, double ear infection, bronchiolitis, and very high fevers.

We spent two tiring nights there and while my little man attempted to get comfortable and rest I simply watched him.

Sleep just wasn’t happening for me and eventually when he settled I grabbed the phone for a mindless midnight scroll.

And there it was…

If you had told me 3 years ago – as I frantically attempted to figure out how to be a SAHM mom to a demanding 2 year old who stopped napping and a newborn who threw up every meal he ate and NEVER…. I mean NEVER slept – that I would just up and start a work from home business around helping other people from laptop…I would have LAUGHED in your face and then sent you to the looney bin.
It just wasn’t in the cards for me.

But here’s the thing…we are all busy.
And we all make time for the things that MATTER – that IMPACT us.
I fell IN LOVE with it all.
Quickly.
With the amazing support from my fellow challengers.
With the family aspect of this team I joined.
With the confidence I was GAINING each and every single day.
I had a purpose again…beyond my role as MOM….
I was HELPING others the same WAY I was helped. And it felt good.

The question was – How can I make TIME?
And you know what – I FIGURED IT OUT.
I didn’t work in an office.
No two days were the same.
I didn’t have 9-5 hours.
BUT I MADE IT WORK.

I made it work – because I wanted it to work for me!!!

Salmon Burgers

Salmon cakes.jpgMy mom has always made the BEST salmon cakes and its been one of those things I’ve left up to her. You know the thing you don’t want to mess with but you quickly suggest when going for a visit.

But after completing WHOLE 30 a few months ago I’ve got a little more creative and daring in the kitchen & I decided to put my big girl pants on and with some guidance over the phone I knocked out some killer salmon cakes:

WHAT YOU NEED:

-5-5oz packets of wild-caught salmon (boneless) – (Note: cans are fine as well I just liked the ease of the little packets)

-2 eggs

-1 medium sweet potato, baked

-3/4 cup almond or coconut flour (I prefer almond)

-2 TBS old bay (give or take depending on how spicy you like it)

-4 gloves minced garlic

-1/2 onion, chopped

-Juice of 1 lemon

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

-Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F

– Line baking pan with parchment paper

– Combine all ingredients until mixed thoroughly

-Scoop cakes and drop onto lined baking dish – I found the LARGE pampered chef cookie scoop is the easiest to get uniform sized cakes, then I flatten with a cup. Could also use 1/4 measuring cup

-Bake 25-30 minutes until golden brown

-Serve with veggie of your choice & ENJOY

Walnut Crusted Pork Tenderloin

walnut-crusted-pork-tenderloin_filteredWhen I started Whole 30 in October 2016 I quickly browsed the cookbook and picked my top dinner choices. I can’t give an exact reason why but the ingredients were purchased on my first Whole 30 shopping trip – yet it took me more than two months to actually make this dish!

Lesson learned – next time don’t be afraid to try something new.

This was DELICIOUS – and just so different from our typical “week night meals”.

In my mind I think I assumed that it was more complicated than it looked…but trust me when I say…if I can make this  – ANYONE CAN!!!

(adapted from the WHOLE 30 Book)

Walnut crusted pork tenderloin with flowers.jpgWHAT YOU NEED:

  • 1 pound pork tenderloin
  • 2 TBS mustard powder
  • 1 TBS paprika
  • 1 TBS onion powder
  • 1 TBS garlic powder
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 1.5 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

  1. Remove pork from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before cooking
  2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  3. Pat the pork dry with a paper towel
  4. Mix the mustard powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper and paprika  in a small bowl and rub the pork evenly with seasoning mixture.
  5. In a food processor (the mini handheld pampered chef one works great!!!) – or by hand – pulse or chop the walnuts until finely chopped.
  6. Coat the pork evenly  with the chopped walnuts.
  7. Place the pork tenderloin in a baking pan ( I used a 7″x11″ pyrex dish and it worked perfectly!) and roast 25-30 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees F.
  8. Let the pork rest for 10 minutes.
  9. Slice the tenderloin into 1/2 inch thick medallions.

Serve with your veggie of choice and more importantly ENJOY!!!

NOTE: I doubled this recipe (as I do with most recipes to ease the meal prep later in the week!!!) and I will vouch the leftovers were just as amazing as night 1!

  3. Commit to the duration of the group.  This is about finding a solution to your needs. A program you’ll enjoy, a program that aligns with your goals, and a program that you can COMPLETE. We will start with a 4 week commitment…but you will always have the option to CONTINUE!!!
  4. Commit to the nutrition plan including, replacing 1 meal a day with Shakeology. Nutrition DRIVES your results, comprising 80% to the 20% that exercise includes. You must fuel your body with the foods it needs to provide energy for your workout, energy to get through your day, and to help your body recover and continue to transform as you progress through the program. Nutrition matters.
  5. You must be willing to hold yourself accountable in our private online accountability group – AND – participate in the group daily to log and monitor your progress. Getting started is one thing – but its following it through to the end where the magic happens!
